It usually holds only a fraction of a millilitre up to about 1 ml, depending on the bottle size, the pipette length and how far you squeeze and release the teat. For a 10 to 30 ml bottle, a full squeeze generally draws roughly a fraction of a millilitre to about 1 ml, and these figures are only approximate.

Why capacity varies

Three things set how much a dropper can hold. The first is the internal diameter of the glass tube, which is narrow in standard dropper pipettes. The second is the length of the tube, which is matched to the bottle height. The third is the volume of the teat, since the amount of air the teat can displace limits how much liquid can be drawn up. Even a long pipette will not fill if the teat is small, and a large teat will not fill a very short pipette.

Typical pipette lengths

Rozmiar butelki

Approximate pipette length

5 ml

about 48 mm

10 ml

about 58 mm

15 ml

about 63 mm

20 ml

about 70 mm

Longer pipettes are used for 30, 50 and 100 ml bottles. Because of the straight tip with a ball end, the liquid is drawn up through a narrow channel and released in controlled drops.

Capacity in drops

A typical dropper gives roughly 20 to 30 drops per millilitre, depending on viscosity and the tip. So a pipette that holds around 1 ml might deliver somewhere between 20 and 30 drops. Thicker liquids give larger drops and fewer per millilitre. Do not treat these numbers as dosing information; they only describe what a typical dropper does. Product instructions should always follow the label.

Graduated pipettes

Some droppers carry marks on the glass so the user can see how much has been drawn up. These marks may be printed with a lead-free, copper-based amber print or applied by laser without any ink. They are a visual guide and not a calibrated measure like a laboratory pipette. If you rely on marks, read them with the pipette upright and the liquid level at eye height.

Getting a full pipette

Squeeze the teat fully before placing the tip in the liquid.

Keep the tip well below the surface while releasing.

Release slowly so that air does not enter.

Tilt the bottle slightly if the liquid level is low.

Matching pipette and bottle

Capacity should not be the only factor when you choose a pipette. The pipette must reach the bottom of the bottle so that the last of the product can be used, and it must fit the neck without touching the walls. That is why pipettes are made in several lengths for different bottle sizes. When you change bottle size, also change the pipette. A pipette that is too long may jam, and one that is too short leaves product behind, which is a common complaint with refilled bottles.

Najczęściej zadawane pytania

Why does my pipette not fill completely?

The teat may be tired or poorly seated, or the liquid may be thick. Check the fit of the teat on the pipette and release it more slowly.

Can I change the capacity?

Not directly. You can choose a pipette with a different length or a teat of a different size, but the practical capacity remains a fraction of a millilitre to about 1 ml.

Is a dropper pipette the same as a lab pipette?

No. A lab pipette is calibrated for volume, while a dropper pipette is a dispensing tool.

Choosing droppers for your product

If your product needs a specific drop behaviour or visible marks, you can choose a plain, graduated or laser-marked pipette, and a teat in NBR or TPE.
